El Toro wasn’t the only perennial football power to miss the playoff party for the first time in ages.

When Capistrano Valley lost to Irvine, 17-13, Saturday and failed to earn the at-large berth in the Division II playoffs, it marked the first time the Cougars had missed postseason play since the school opened in 1977.

“It’s a tough one to swallow,” Capistrano Valley Coach Eric Patton said. “Especially when you consider that a 3-2 record in league is usually good enough to get you in the playoffs.”
