Standout sprinter Marion Jones, the defending state champion in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, has left Oxnard Rio Mesa High and enrolled at Thousand Oaks.
Brian FitzGerald, athletic director and track coach at Rio Mesa, said Jones left the school Thursday. She was seen with her mother at the Thousand Oaks campus Wednesday, apparently documenting the transfer.
“Marion is now . . . attending Thousand Oaks High School,” FitzGerald said. “I don’t know the whys, hows, and wherefores.”
Jones, a junior who won state titles in the 100 and 200 meters in her freshman and sophomore seasons, recently was named 1991 female high school athlete of the year by Track & Field News. Her 200 time of 22.76 seconds is a national high school record and her 100 time of 11.17 is second fastest at the high school level.
