Marina Draws Early Lead, Then Falters to Fontana

Fullback Richard Stephens rushed for 236 yards and three touchdowns in 27 carries to lift second-seeded Fontana to a 21-13 victory over Marina in front of about 2,500 Friday night at Steeler Stadium.

Stephens scored on runs of 55, 42 and 10 yards to lead the Steelers, and Chad Duke kicked all three extra points.

The Vikings, the No. 3 team out of the Sunset League, ended their season 6-5. The Steelers (9-1), runners-up in the Citrus Belt League, will play Mater Dei in a second-round game.

Marina took a 7-0 lead 57 seconds into the game. Fontana’s Steve Woods and Mike May fumbled a reverse handoff on the opening kickoff and Danny Lu fell on the ball at the Fontana three.

Two plays later, Marina’s Tony Parrish rushed from one yard into the end zone and Donny McMahan added the extra point.
