SDSU Volleyball Team Clinches 3rd With Win

Gracie Schutt had 16 kills and three aces to lead San Diego State to a 15-3, 17-16, 15-5 victory over Wyoming at Laramie on Friday. Coach Rudy Suwara said it was the best team performance this year by the Aztecs (17-3, 7-4 in the WAC), who clinched third place and put themselves in position for an NIT Tournament berth.

Carolyn Kaspar added 10 kills and an ace for SDSU.

Pt. Loma Nazarene took an 18-4 lead four minutes into the game and coasted to a 99-57 nonconference victory over Occidental in the season opener for both teams. PLNC’s Christy Stevens scored 29 points, including five three-pointers, and Rochelle Lightner had 12 rebounds to go with 20 points. Stacee Eggers scored 16. Occidental got 18 points and 15 rebounds from Tanisha White.

Grossmont College (13-5, 12-0) maintained their 75 game conference win streak by upending Palomar College (11-5, 8-4) at Griffing Gym, 15-5, 14-16, 15-4, 15-13. The Griffins have won the Pacific Coast Conference title the last seven years. Grossmont’s Stephanie MacLeod led all players in two categories with 16 kills and 7 blocks. Grossmont will host the first round of the Southern California Championships this Tuesday at 7 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Erik Johnson and Chris Moore scored 14 points to lead UCSD to a season-opening victory over visiting Pomona-Pitzer, 88-53. Rick Batt scored 13 and John Spence scored 11 for the Tritons, who held a 47-27 halftime lead.

SIGNINGS

Poway High senior Sasha Boros has signed a national letter of intent to play tennis next season at the University of Iowa. A three-time Palomar League champion, she was the 10th seed in the San Diego Section playoffs and lost in the quarterfinals to third-seeded Marissa Velasco of USDHS, 6-3, 6-0. Boros plans to study political science.
