UCI Water Polo Seeded Fourth in NCAA Tournament

The UC Irvine water polo team has been seeded fourth in the NCAA championship tournament and will play No. 5 Cal State Long Beach at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

Irvine, returning to the eight-team tournament after a rare absence last season, has competed in 19 of the 23 NCAA tournaments.

The Anteaters (20-7) won both regular-season meetings against Long Beach (15-9), defeating the 49ers, 6-3, and 8-7.

Friday’s winner will face California, the defending champion and No. 1-ranked team, in a semifinal Saturday.

The final will be played at 8 p.m. Sunday.

Other pairings for Friday’s first-round games, all at Belmont Plaza:

No. 1 California (23-1) vs. No. 8 Navy (18-6), 3 p.m.

No. 2 Pepperdine (22-6) vs. No. 7 Slippery Rock (25-5), 4:30 p.m.

No. 3 UCLA (17-9) vs. No. 6 UC San Diego (21-14), 6 p.m.
