Brodowski, perhaps trying not to set unrealistic goals, tabs his team only as a dark horse in the league race. But the Matadors could scramble for a playoff spot by February. That would be a major development, considering that they have won a total of three league games the past two seasons while finishing last both times. The coach, now in his third year, said the team is quick and has excellent leadership from three seniors--Quach, Tantardini and Lockhart--who are three-year varsity players. In Quach, an 1990-91 all-league pick who averaged 14.8 points, Bolsa possesses a genuine scoring threat. She shot 51% from the field (85 of 165) and made 67% of her three-point attempts (28 of 42). “All she needs is a good supporting cast,” Brodowski said. Tantardini (9.4 points per game) and Lockhart (8.2 points per game) add experience in the front line and will flank Rutkowski, who played on the freshman team last year; Brodowski said she is well-coordinated for her size but nevertheless remains a “project.” Alvarado led the Bolsa Grande junior varsity to third place last year and probably will back up Quach. Brodowski said one of his goals is to instill confidence in his players. “Overall, we are a young team. How we do in preseason will be critical to our success in league,” he said.
