The Chapman men’s basketball team took its annual Division I lumps Tuesday night, absorbing a 94-64 beating by Texas El Paso in El Paso.

Last season, the Division II Panthers were 1-2 against Division I opponents, including a 101-68 loss to Louisiana State. Texas El Paso, the only Division I opponent on the schedule this season, led 44-26 at the half and shot 59.3% for the game.

Texas El Paso’s Marlon Maxey, returning from a one-game NCAA suspension, opened his season with a career-best 30 points and Johnny Melvin scored 24 points, including a perfect nine-for-nine from the free-throw line.

Maxey, a 6-foot-8 senior who led the Miners (2-0) in scoring each of the last two seasons, sat out Saturday’s season-opening victory over Texas Southern because of an NCAA suspension for unauthorized use of school telephones.

Marcell Driver had 17 points, 11 in the second half, and seven rebounds for the Panthers (1-2). Guard Jeff Gardner, a transfer from Lee College in Baytown, Tex., scored 13 points and Rog Middleton scored 11 for Chapman, which kept the game close early by playing solid defense.

In another nonconference men’s basketball game:

Christ College Irvine 74, Whittier 65--Aaron Clasen scored 21 points, making seven of eight shots from the field, including three-for-three from the three-point line, for host Christ College (1-1). Whittier briefly took a lead in the second half before Clasen scored six consecutive points on a three-point basket and a three-point play.

In California Coastal Conference men’s basketball:

San Jose Christian 73, Pacific Christian 71--Corey Pischel scored 19 points for Pacific Christian (2-6) at Cal State Fullerton.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Southern California College 70, Whittier 53--Kristen Bevis had 18 points and 10 rebounds for host Southern California College (1-1), which led 50-30 at the half.
