Moorpark College ended the regular season with a bang Saturday in its 63-3 victory over Ventura in a Western State Conference North Division football game.

The Raiders, led by quarterback Corey Tucker, running back Jamal Anderson and wide receiver Curtis Marsh, rolled up a school-record 742 yards against the Pirates, smashing the previous high of 621 set against Compton in a 49-19 victory in 1986.

Tucker’s three touchdown passes gave him 18 for the season to tie the school record set by Ken Lutz in 1985.

Anderson’s 185 yards rushing gave him 1,063, marking the third year in a row that the Raiders have had a 1,000-yard rusher. Freddie Bradley rushed for 1,266 yards in 1989 and 1,946 last season.

Marsh became Moorpark’s first 1,000-yard receiver by catching five passes for 250 yards and four touchdowns against Ventura. The 250 yards set a school record and pushed his season total to 1,030. He has 48 receptions.

Moorpark’s victory gave the Raiders an 8-2 record, marking the seventh year in a row that they have lost no more than two games during the regular season.

Moorpark has compiled a regular-season record of 56-12 during that time.

Marty Washington of Antelope Valley completed 13 of 25 passes for two touchdowns and a school-record 314 yards in the Marauders’ 27-26 loss to Citrus last Saturday.

The 314 yards improved Washington’s season total to a school-record 1,463 yards, which broke the 1,448-yard mark he set last season. His 12 touchdown passes in a season leave him one shy of the school record he shares with 1987 graduate Keith Gainey (1987).

LaShante Parker of Pierce was held without a touchdown in last Saturday’s 23-7 loss to Bakersfield, snapping a streak in which he had rushed for at least two touchdowns in each of the previous three games.

Terrance Brown of Valley gained 204 yards in 20 carries and scored four touchdowns in Valley’s 40-28 loss to Santa Monica. He has 1,138 yards, third on the Monarchs’ single-season list.

Basketball: It was hoped that the move to small forward would help Cal State Northridge senior Keith Gibbs improve on the 39.7% field-goal percentage of last season. But Gibbs missed nine of 12 shots in the Matadors’ opener against Butler, clanked six of seven against Evansville and he is shooting just 26.9%.

He is getting rebounds, however--a team-leading eight offensive rebounds and 18 overall.

It took three games, but Tom Bruner, The Master’s College much-heralded senior forward, finally flashed his usual form.

Bruner started this season with seven points and four rebounds in the Mustangs’ 125-45 win over Simpson College and eight points and three rebounds in a 112-63 win over San Jose Christian.

Of course, the Mustangs didn’t really need big games from Bruner against either of those overmatched opponents.

It took a game in which Master’s stepped up to play NCAA Division II Cal State Los Angeles for Bruner to shine. Master’s lost, 96-92, but Bruner scored 14 points and grabbed 15 rebounds.

“Bruner started to get back in the flow,” Master’s Coach Mel Hankinson said.

It seems all he needed was a chance. In Master’s two victories, Hankinson substituted early and often, but against the Golden Eagles, Bruner played 28 minutes.

Bruner will make his 105th consecutive start for Master’s on Saturday against the University of St. Thomas (Houston) in Bross Gym.

The Cal Lutheran men opened their season with a bigger and stronger lineup because of the additions of 6-foot-4, 200-pound Andy Beltowski, 6-6, 200-pound Mike Fenton and 6-6, 205-pound Rupert Sapwell.

So far, bigger hasn’t necessarily meant better.

In an 80-76 loss to St. John’s in the Menlo tournament on Friday, Beltowski made all six field-goal attempts and one of two free throws to score 13 points. But Fenton, who started at center, made just one of two field goals in 20 minutes and Sapwell, a starting guard, made two of eight in 15 minutes.

Volleyball: Northridge senior outside hitter-defensive specialist Karen Scholl made her final match appearance at Matador Gym on Tuesday and recorded five digs to finish the regular season with a single-season, school-record 399 digs. Former Matador Kathleen Dixon set the old mark of 383 in 1990.

Scholl was not the only Matador to break the record. Junior Nancy Nicholls, who leads CSUN in kills with 325, finished the regular season with 394 digs.
