HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL / CITY PLAYOFFS : San Pedro Shuts Out Franklin

Take San Pedro High out of the tough Southern Pacific Conference, and the Pirates are a very difficult football team to beat.

San Pedro continued its nonconference success Wednesday night, defeating Franklin, 27-0, in a City Section 3-A Division quarterfinal playoff game at Poly High in Sun Valley.

The Pirates (8-4), whose only losses this season came in conference play, will meet Crenshaw in the semifinals Dec. 6.

Crenshaw, which beat Reseda, 12-0, on Wednesday night, had defeated San Pedro for the Southern League title two weeks ago.

“The Southern Pacific Conference is not too bad a conference,” San Pedro Coach Mike Walsh said. “But, I don’t care who we’re playing as long as we’re winning. We’re glad to be where we are.”

Fourth-seeded San Pedro, the Southern League’s second-place representative, controlled the game on both sides of the ball, holding Franklin (7-5) to 64 yards rushing and 164 yards overall.

The Pirates led, 14-0, at halftime, and broke the game open in the third period on Ambrose Russo’s 78-yard touchdown run. Russo finished with a game-high 171 yards in 16 carries.

Dorsey 25, Locke 6--Tailback Sharmon Shah rushed for three touchdowns and passed for another to lead the Dons to a victory over Locke in a City 4-A quarterfinal at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Shah, a senior tailback, gained 142 yards in 22 carries to lead the Dons into a semifinal against Sylmar, which defeated San Fernando, 31-7.

Shah scored on runs of one, nine and 32 yards as Dorsey led, 18-0, at halftime. Dorsey is 7-1-1. Locke finished 7-4.

Sylmar 31, San Fernando 7--Sylmar tailback Tobaise Brookins rushed for 189 yards in 30 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the Spartans (10-1) at San Fernando.

Sylmar took a 17-0 lead in the second quarter on Brian Roberson’s 52-yard touchdown run.

The Tigers (10-2) scored their only touchdown in the second quarter on a two-yard run by LaKarlos Townsend.

Roosevelt 21, Marshall 13--Antoine Embry carried nine times for 101 yards and Roosevelt (8-2-1) overcame a 13-0 halftime deficit in the 3-A quarterfinal at Wilson High.

Chatsworth 21, Huntington Park 19--The Chatsworth defense set up two touchdowns and stalled a last-minute drive in a City 3-A quarterfinal at Huntington Park.

In the second quarter, Chatsworth’s Frankie Jaramillo, a defensive tackle, stripped the ball from Huntington Park running back Adrian Fernandez and fell on it at Huntington Park 41-yard line. Four plays later, quarterback Brian Comer connected with Robert Webb for a 25-yard touchdown pass play with 10:16 remaining in the quarter.

Chatsworth opened the second half by driving 65 yards on eight plays and scoring when Comer threw to John Gamm for a 29-yard touchdown play, giving Chatsworth a 14-0 lead.
