Track No Problem for Fox at Saugus

Stan Fox, who won last year’s Turkey Night Midget Grand Prix on the dirt at Ascot Park, repeated late Thursday night on the asphalt at Saugus Speedway to become the first driver in the race’s 51-year history to win on both surfaces.

Fox had to survive a second-chance heat to get into the finals, then came from behind in the 100-lap main event to pass Mike Fedorcak on the 73rd lap for the lead and was never headed.

Fedorcak dropped out five laps later, and Chuck Gurney finished second, followed by Wally Pankratz, George Ito and fast-qualifier Jimmy Sills.

Page Jones was running second, two laps from the finish, when he ran over a slower car on the backstretch after a restart and failed to finish. He ended up eighth in the final standings.

The U.S. Auto Club midget championship will be decided tonight at Imperial Raceway, near El Centro. Stevie Reeves’ lead over Mike Streicher was narrowed to four points at Saugus when Reeves’ car quit after 55 laps while Streicher was finishing ninth. Tonight’s race concludes the USAC season.
