ROUNDUP : Van Nuys Snaps Grant Streak

Grant High’s 31-game conference winning streak in basketball was snapped Tuesday when Van Nuys defeated the Lancers, 47-37, in a Valley Pac-8 Conference opener at Van Nuys. Grant (1-1), the defending East Valley League champion, had not lost a conference game since the 1988-89 season.

Van Nuys (1-1) owned a 23-11 lead at halftime and kept Grant at bay throughout the second half. Ernesto Dominguez scored 15 points for the Wolves and Caesar Felici added 12. Darwin Alfelor scored 13 points for Grant and Wayne Carlisle added 10.

In other boys’ basketball games:

North Hollywood 64, Birmingham 44--DeShawn Harvey and Damon Ollie each scored 12 points to pace North Hollywood (3-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference opener at North Hollywood.

Sherman Oaks CES 69, Canoga Park 46--Mitch Shenkin scored 21 points and made three of three three-point attempts to lead host Sherman Oaks CES (2-0 in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Monroe 86, Sylmar 47--Jeff Nadeu scored a team-high 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the host Vikings (1-1) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference opener.

Dorsey 87, Cleveland 56--Shawn Bankhead of Cleveland (0-2) scored a game-high 37 points but Dorsey ran away with the nonleague game.

Bankhead, a 6-foot-6 junior, made 11 of 12 free throws, but sat out eight minutes of play early in the second half because of foul trouble.

San Fernando 84, Belmont 55--Sophomores Jerome Elliott and Javier Ramos led visiting San Fernando (1-1) in a nonleague game. Elliott had 18 points and 18 rebounds. Ramos scored 25 points.

Oxnard 70, Palmdale 58--Jasper Satterwhite scored a game-high 14 points for Oxnard (1-1) in a consolation game of the Simi Valley tournament.

Newbury Park 64, Calabasas 46--Robert Fick of Newbury Park made five three-point baskets for a team-high 15 points in a nonleague game. Anthony Hampton had 17 points for Calabasas.

Chaminade 74, Cate 56--Richard Fei hit six of eight three-point shots to lead the Eagles (1-0) in a first-round game of the Faith Baptist tournament.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

North Hollywood 83, Birmingham 14--All five North Hollywood starters scored in double figures as the Huskies built a 62-7 lead after three quarters of a Valley Pac-8 Conference opener at Birmingham.

Westchester 44, Taft 42--Taft’s Julie Kawamoto’s 30-foot basket came just after the buzzer ended a nonleague game at Taft.

Canoga Park 44, Sherman Oaks CES 25--Anna Gonzalez and Annette Covany each scored 14 points to help the Hunters (1-1) beat Sherman Oaks (1-1) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference opener.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 95, Citrus 55--Katina Mines scored 15 points for Valley (4-0) in an nonconference game.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Riverside 95, The Master’s 74--Tom Bruner scored 22 points and Jason Webster added 17 for Master’s (3-3) in a nonconference game. Joe Jon Bryant played in his first game for Master’s after clearing up an academic technicality and scored two points.
