PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Record, Running Game Rank Near the Bottom

Share

The Rams’ 3-10 record is an obvious disappointment, but almost as alarming is their ranking as 27th in the NFL in rushing. A John Robinson-coached team second-to-last running the ball?

A return to the power-running game was the No. 1 priority for 1991, but injuries to running backs and offensive linemen sidetracked Robinson’s plans.

“Probably the thing I regret the most is that we just didn’t stay with it no matter what,” Robinson said. “But when you’re 3-3 and trying to do the best you can to compensate and still win the game, you have that tendency to rely on the pass. We reached the point where we relied on it too much.”

The two power tailbacks who were supposed to do the bulk of the running have combined for 259 yards. Cleveland Gary’s knee has cost him most of the season. Marcus Dupree missed the first seven games because of a foot injury. And the injury-riddled offensive line has been in chaos.

Robinson: “We lost our right tackle for four games, our left tackle for six, the backup tackle for five, our right guard for the season, left guard for eight games and we made a replacement at center. There’s been some extenuating circumstances. We also just aren’t doing a good enough job.”
