OUTLOOK

In her second year as coach, Brazell is trying to re-establish the Vaquero program. Irvine went winless for three consecutive seasons before Brazell took over last year. “Irvine has never had a strong emphasis on girls’ basketball,” Brazell said. “We’re trying to build a reputable program that will draw in athletes that are dominating in other Irvine girls’ sports.” With five starters back and some talented newcomers, Irvine might make teams pay attention this year. Point guard Lee has the potential to be one of the top guards in the league, according to Brazell. “I thought she might need until next year to reach that level, but I think she’ll get there this year,” Brazell said. “She’s really playing well.” The Vaqueros also return Reyes, who was an honorable mention all-league performer at guard last year. Mahon is the team’s top rebounder and inside defensive player. Bhandari and Brissenden also add good rebounding potential and strong post defense to the Vaquero front line. Brazell says Bullock is the team’s top athlete and is developing quickly at guard and forward. Jones adds depth to the front line, and Vyn is solid on offense and defense. “I think we might surprise some teams this year,” Brazell said.
