Prospero worked a miracle at Chapman College, where chaos ruled in 1988-89. Installed as an interim coach, he quieted the turmoil and kept the basketball program from falling to pieces. At Santa Ana Valley the pieces need to be picked up. The Falcons are 7-32 during the past two seasons, so Prospero has his work cut out for him. “Things have been really positive,” Prospero said. “The kids have worked hard and there are some good athletes here.” The best ones are in the backcourt. Porter, who played on the junior varsity last season, will be the point guard, with Zazueta moving to off guard. “Porter just lacks experience,” Prospero said. “He’s going to be very good.” Those two, along with Cueva, give the Falcons plenty of quickness in the backcourt. Prospero plans to take advantage of that by using a pressure defense. “We’re not very tall, so we’re going to have to create tempo,” he said. “We’ll need to force the other team into mistakes.” The Falcons are weak inside, although Singleton can muscle with the best. However, he will need help to be effective inside. Serrano could be that help, but has not proved himself yet. “It’ll be rough at first, but I think we’ll be OK by the time we get around to league,” Prospero said. “There’s a lot of potential here.”
