Montana Overwhelms Northridge
Undersized Cal State Northridge could not handle three Montana inside players who shot 89% Saturday night and dealt the Matadors a 67-48 defeat at Matador Gymnasium.
Northridge (0-6) has lost nine consecutive games, dating to last season.
Montana (7-0) shot only 38% in the first half, primarily from the outside. When the Grizzlies went inside in the second half to Daren Engellant (16 points), Nate Atchison (11 points) and Josh Lacheur (10 points), they buried Northridge.
“They were a little small,” said Engellant, who stands 6 feet 10. “We knew we needed to pound it into the post.”
Northridge’s 6-7 backup center Brian Kilian said: “It is very frustrating. You try to get around them and do your job, and they just lob it over you.”
Montana outrebounded Northridge, 23-10, in the second half and limited the Matadors to 33% shooting.
Northridge trailed by three points at halftime, but Montana outscored them, 19-6, in the first six minutes of the second half to take a 48-34 lead.
