Golden West won its second consecutive women’s State volleyball title with a three-game sweep of Cerritos in the championship match Sunday at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo.

Golden West had defeated Cerritos earlier Sunday in the winners’ bracket final. The Rustlers finished with a record of 27-0.

Tracy Schriber, a freshman, had a team-high 12 kills in the final match as Golden West won, 15-7, 15-12, 15-6.

It was the third title in four season for Golden West and Coach Albert Gasparian.

“It was the first time we’ve ever played well in the finals,” Gasparian said. “The other times we just muddled through.”

Schriber was selected the tournament’s most valuable player. Golden West’s Brenda Irby, Karen Jacobson and setter Margaret Weese were named to the all-tournament team.

Cerritos (25-4) had extended Golden West to five games, but the Rustlers rallied to win, 15-8, 15-8, 8-15, 12-15, 15-7, in the winners’ bracket final of the double-elimination tournament.

It was only the second time this season a team had forced Golden West to five games.

It was the second State title for Golden West this fall, which also won the water polo title last month.

It was also the second State title an Orange County school won over the weekend. The Orange Coast men’s soccer team defeated Irvine Valley, 3-1, Saturday at El Camino College.
