HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL : Rancho Bernardo Edges Morse in Tournament

Rancho Bernardo hit seven of eight three-pointers, including senior guard Bill McMahon’s game-winner with three seconds left, as the Broncos defeated Morse 73-72 Wednesday night in the opening round of the Vista boys’ basketball tournament.

McMahon hit four of six three pointers and scored 20 points. Senior forward Kirk Hipple, who was 15 of 15 from the free-throw line and pulled down 14 rebounds, led Rancho Bernardo (1-0) with 34 points. Edward Charles led Morse (1-1) with 26 points.

Other Vista tournament games:

Carlsbad 67, Canyon Springs (Moreno Valley) 46--Kewan Shariff scored a game-high 26 points, including four three-pointers, and Andy Reed and Chad Nelson added 10 for Carlsbad (3-2). Carlsbad will play Rancho Bernardo at Vista (5:15) in tonight’s second round. Canyon Springs fell to 3-1.

Mission Bay 52, Southwest 45--Chris Smith’s game-high 17 points led Mission Bay. Tony Diaz had 16 to lead Southwest.

Fallbrook 65, San Marcos 57--Chris Miller scored a game-high 28 points and Brandon Phillips added 20 for Fallbrook (1-0). Center Horace Corey, a transfer from Iowa, scored 26 to lead San Marcos (1-1). For its trouble, Fallbrook gets Artesia tonight at 7. Artesia, led by forward Charles O’Bannon and 6-11 center Avondre Jones, is ranked second in the state in Division II.

Grossmont Tournament

Helix 59, Clairemont 48--Kevin Hagen hit five of six three-pointers and finished with 23 points for Helix (2-0). Lloyd Lake added 21 points and 16 rebounds for Helix. Clairemont fell to 1-1.

Non-league

Granite Hills 88, USDHS 82--Granite Hills outscored USDHS (0-1) 30-16 in the third quarter to take a 13-point lead, before the Dons rallied. Ian Hamilton led USDHS with 26 points.
