FOOTBALL PLAYOFF NOTES : Anaheim Stadium Site Assured for Mater Dei

Share

Anaheim Stadium officials removed the facility’s rain clause Wednesday, ensuring that the Southern Section’s Division I championship game between the Mater Dei and Eisenhower high school football teams will be played there, rain or shine.

General admission and reserved seat tickets will be on sale at the Freedom Bowl’s ticket booth outside Gate 9 at the stadium beginning at noon today. Under previous terms of the contract between the Southern Section and the stadium, the game could have been moved to avoid damaging the field during inclement weather.

The alternate site was Cerritos College with a capacity of 12,000. Officials at the Southern Section had restricted the competing schools to 6,000 tickets earlier in the week. Mater Dei sold its allotment in two days.

Don Andersen, executive director of the Orange County Sports Assn., said he was disappointed that there was a rain clause.

“I helped (former commissioner) Kenny Fagans put on the first championship game in Anaheim Stadium between Mater Dei and Anaheim in 1966, and I’d like to see another big crowd for a prep football game at Anaheim,” Andersen said. “I think there was some miscommunication between the stadium and the CIF (Southern Section).”
