OUTLOOK

University has one of the more experienced teams in the league with four starters and seven lettermen returning. But that good news is tempered by the fact that the Trojans weren’t able to win a league game last season. Even so, Dinneen, in his second year after moving from St. Paul High in Santa Fe Springs, is confident the program is moving forward. The lower-level teams were much improved last season and the varsity won in the first round of the playoffs. Dinneen will have the Trojans running again. University starts four guards, three of whom are less than 6 feet tall. Venegas, who was the league’s leading scorer last season with an average of 21.8 points, made 80 of the team’s 188 three-point shots last season. Whelihan averaged 15.6 points and Durham averaged seven points and seven assists. But the key to the offense is Dowdy, an inside scoring (17 points) and rebounding (7.1 rebounds) threat. Without Dowdy, who is making the transition from the football team that advanced to the Division VI semifinals, the Trojans have been ineffective.
