OUTLOOK

Bigler is the only starter returning from a team that failed to win a league game last season, but Fountain Valley showed steady improvement in the 16-team Cerritos-Gahr Tournament last week, finishing eighth. The Barons beat Millikan by 23 points and Cerritos by six and could be a surprise in the league. Fountain Valley had won more than half as many games (three) in the first two weeks of the season as it did last season. Bowman and Thornton were the team’s most consistent players early, scoring in double figures in both tournament victories. Bowman is averaging 12 points and Thornton is at 10. Rieff and Petrosian have been the team’s best rebounders. “We should be a good shooting team,” Billingsley said. “We don’t have much size, so we’re going to have to shoot well to stay in ballgames. Our goal this year is to break the .500 mark and be a competitive team in every game.” The schedule-maker wasn’t kind to Fountain Valley. The Barons play Huntington Beach, Edison and Ocean View in a six-day span twice during league play. Fountain Valley’s tournament schedule included Arroyo Grande and Orange.
