OUTLOOK

All-American center Cherokee Parks has graduated and is playing at Duke, but Marina served notice that it again will be a contender for the league title when it upset Estancia, 66-64, in the Pilot Tipoff Classic last week. Second-team all-league guard Darren Crooks, who averaged 10 points as a junior, has doubled his offensive production this season. Crooks had 22 points in the big victory over Estancia. “This team could be very exciting,” Popovich said. “We have excellent overall quickness and shoot well from the perimeter.” The Vikings’ offensive game will take a dramatic change from the low-post set with Parks in the middle last year. This season, Marina will rely on the long-range shooting of Crooks and Keim to be effective. “We need to improve our rebounding and inside defense, but I think we’re going to be good,” Popovich said. Marina should get an early indication of where it stands in the league. The Vikings play co-favorites Huntington Beach and Edison in their second and third league games in January.
