Saugus Senior Sets 2 World Lifting Records

Share

Kim Templeman, a Saugus High senior competing for the first time, set world records in the bench-press and the strict curl Saturday in two competitions at a gym in Selma, Calif., and took home four trophies. Templeman weighed in at 159 pounds and competed in the under-165 weight class.

Templeman curled 80 pounds to win both the teen-age (16-17 year-old) and the women’s trophies in the World Strict Curl Congress’ World Championships (which also served as the California State Championships because the state competition had been canceled earlier this year). The lift broke Congress world records by 10 pounds in both divisions.

Templeman bench-pressed 150 pounds in the American Power Lifting Assn.’s Second Chance Bench Press Championships to win the teen-age and the women’s divisions in the competition and set an association world record in the teen-age division.

The 17-year old Templeman became interested in powerlifting three years ago when she lived with her family in the port city of Jiddah, Saudi Arabia. “It was the only thing to do,” Templeman said.

Royal High senior Mike Radka was chosen Ventura County water polo player of the year in a vote by county coaches. Royal Coach Steve Snyder, who guided the Highlanders to the Southern Section 3-A Division semifinals, was named coach of the year.

Also on the first team are Jack Kocur (Royal); Cameron Leavens (Buena); Richard Marquez (Buena); Jeff Bissell (Agoura); Terry Polapink (Agoura) and Sean Osborn (Ventura).
