La Canada High will play host this week to its first boys’ basketball tournament, and it’s an impressive eight-team field that includes four defending league champions.

La Canada, Morningside, Notre Dame and Harvard-Westlake are the league-champion representatives in a tournament that begins today and also includes San Fernando, Marshall, Burbank and El Rancho.

“Morningside has one of the best programs around,” said La Canada Coach Tom Hofman, who has guided the Spartans to four consecutive Rio Hondo League championships. “We hope to meet them in the finals.”

San Fernando plays Morningside today at 3:30 p.m., followed by Marshall vs. Notre Dame at 5, Burbank vs. Harvard-Westlake at 6:30, and El Rancho vs. La Canada at 7:30.

The 1991 Times All-Glendale football team will be announced in next Thursday’s edition.

The first and second teams from The Times’ 12 circulation areas were chosen by Times sportswriters with the assistance of area coaches. A breakfast and awards ceremony at 9 a.m. Jan. 12 at the Woodland Hills Marriott Hotel, 21850 Oxnard St., will honor the first-team Glendale selections. At the ceremony, the area’s back, lineman and coach of the year will be named.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale men’s basketball team is playing host to its annual tournament this week, but as of Tuesday, Coach Brian Beauchemin was not sure if it was going to be a seven or eight-team event.

Luke Air Force Base of Phoenix, which was supposed to be Glendale’s first-round opponent, dropped out of the tournament Monday.

L.A. Harbor, West Los Angeles, Valley, El Camino, Edwards Air Force Base and College of the Canyons are confirmed.

After consecutive victories over Ventura and Trade Tech, Glendale improved to 3-6.

Grace Padilla, who recently completed her season with the Glendale College cross-country team, won the 14th Run for the Roses 5-K last Saturday at the Rose Bowl. Padilla won the event in 18:01.

Caroline Gasmine and Christina Gumpert of the Glendale women’s volleyball team were honorable mention All-Western State Conference selections by the league’s coaches.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Harry Marks, Glendale--Marks, a sophomore, provided clutch free-throw shooting that helped give the Vaquero basketball team two consecutive victories.

On Friday night, Marks made two free throws with 7.6 seconds left, securing Glendale’s 85-82 victory over Trade Tech. He finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.

On Dec. 10, Marks made two free throws with 12 seconds left that ensured Glendale’s 75-72 victory over Ventura.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Les Horvath--Horvath, the 1944 Heisman Trophy winner from Ohio State, retired on Thursday from his Glendale dental practice.

Horvath, 70, a quarterback and tailback for the Buckeyes, practiced dentistry for more than 40 years.

Horvath attended Saturday’s Heisman Trophy ceremonies in New York, where Michigan junior Desmond Howard was the 1991 award winner.

COLLEGES

The Occidental men’s basketball team rebounded from a two-week layoff and defeated UC Santa Cruz, 74-58, Monday night.

The Tigers, who played at San Jose Christian Wednesday night, improved to 2-1 with the victory over Santa Cruz.

Sandy Brown, a senior forward, is Occidental’s leading scorer, averaging 23 points a game.

The Occidental women’s team, which is 0-5, also played at San Jose Christian.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Eddie Powell, Verdugo Hills--Powell, a junior guard, scored 40 points on Friday in the Dons’ 69-65 victory over Belmont.

Powell also had six rebounds, four assists and three steals as Verdugo Hills improved to 3-1 with the victory in its Northern Conference opener.

MISCELLANY

Margarito Casillas of Hoover High finished fifth at the Kinney national cross-country championships on Saturday at Balboa Park in San Diego. Casillas, a senior, ran the 5,000-meter course in 15 minutes 30.6 seconds. Jeff Ihmels of Williston, N.D., won the event in 15:03.6. . . . The USC baseball program is holding a camp for players ages 13 to 17 on Dec. 26-29. High school seniors are not eligible to attend. Information: (213) 740-8444. . . .
