In the first round of the San Dieguito boys’ basketball tournament:

Trabuco Hills 69, Newport Harbor 61--Gavin Vanderputten’s 25 points and 12 rebounds led the county’s eighth-ranked team over 10th-ranked Newport Harbor. Justin McIntee had 21 points for Newport Harbor.

In the first round of the Arroyo Grande boys’ basketball tournament:

Anaheim 63, Atascadero 58--Boun Malapha scored 25 points, including four three-pointers, for Anaheim (2-5).

In the consolation semifinals of the La Verne Damien boys’ basketball tournament:

El Dorado 77, La Verne Lutheran 52--Mark Selway had a game-high 21 points and six three-pointers for El Dorado (2-4).

In the La Quinta girls’ basketball tournament:

Corona del Mar 36, Esperanza 33--Mollie Flint had a basket and two free throws in the final 50 seconds as the Sea Kings (5-4) overcame a 33-32 deficit. Flint finished with 23 points.

In the Orange Lutheran girls’ basketball tournament:

Villa Park 37, Chino Ayala 36 (OT)--Sylvia Salgado’s only three points of the game accounted for all of Villa Park’s overtime scoring.

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

Troy 58, Canyon 40--Branee Richardson had 21 points and Dede Logmann 19 as the Warriors (4-3) moved above the .500 mark. Erin Waggoner led Canyon with 19.

In Garden Grove League girls’ soccer:

Kennedy 9, Bolsa Grande 1--Lori Van Herk and Adrian Poan each scored three goals for host Kennedy (5-1-2, 2-0).

La Quinta 2, Rancho Alamitos 0--Reagan Batterman and Danielle Skinner scored in the first half and Lisa Cahn made five saves, leading the Aztecs (1-4, 1-1) to their first victory of the season.

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

Edison 3, Capistrano Valley 3--Monica Larrson scored all three goals for Capistrano Valley at Edison. Christine Tyler scored twice for Edison (4-1-2).

Mater Dei 3, Dana Hills 0--Chrissy Wahlen scored in each half and Amber Escobedo added a second-half goal as the visiting Monarchs improved to 4-1.
