COLLEGE FOOTBALL / BOWL REPORT : CITRUS : Cal Changes Tune, Praises Clemson

Brian Treggs, Cal’s leading receiver, has been known for his outrageous game predictions this season. But going into Wednesday’s Citrus Bowl game against Clemson he’s being cautious.

“I usually predict blowouts but this one is going to be close,” said Treggs, a senior from Carson. “They are a good football team--really--and I don’t give too many football teams credit. They run to the ball well and play really well on defense.

“As far as we’re concerned it’s just plain execution on our part and we have to get back the type of discipline we had before the Stanford game.”

Cal lost to Stanford, 38-21.

One of Treggs’ more notable predictions was before Cal’s first game against Pacific where he said his team would win by 50. Treggs thought he was in trouble but Cal Coach Bruce Snyder surprised him.

“After it came out in the paper I thought, ‘Oh, man, Coach Snyder is really going to tear me apart.’ But he didn’t say anything to me. I guess he just accepted it because he knew who I was and that I like to give my opinion to the media.”

Cal went on to win by 62 points, 86-24.

“But after the game,” Treggs said, “Coach Snyder came up to me and said he was disappointed in me because I limited our team by predicting we’d win by only 50.”
