6 Seriously Hurt in Head-On Collision

Six people were seriously injured early New Year’s morning when a Van Nuys man allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol crossed the divider on Roscoe Boulevard and crashed head-on into a van, police said.

Herman Delgado, 21, was traveling east near Yarmouth Avenue in Reseda shortly after midnight Wednesday when he hit the van, according to Los Angeles Police Officer Theresa Cirocco. Delgado, who suffered a broken left leg and cuts to other parts of his body, was arrested at the scene and taken to the prison ward at Los Angeles County USC Medical Center.

A passenger in his car, Elsa Salazar, 28, of Van Nuys suffered multiple fractures, including a broken pelvis, and had one finger partially amputated. Salazar was taken to Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills.

Also in Delgado’s car were two minors, ages 16 and 8, who received minor injuries.

The driver of the van, Mohamed Azeem, 29, suffered broken bones, as did passengers Ayeshe Azeem, 28, Uzma Sultana, 28, and Arshia Sultana, 21. All were taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center.
