SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Jelena Sadzak and Lori Van Herk each scored two goals in Kennedy’s 5-0 victory over Pacifica in Garden Grove League play Thursday at Pacifica High School.

Twelve minutes into the game, Sadzak opened Kennedy’s attack with a 35-yard shot that floated over Pacifica goalie Chris Arvelo’s head. Sadzak capped scoring with a hard, low, 18-yard drive into the net with 30 seconds left to play.

Van Herk scored 15 minutes into the second half on a cross from the left side by Adrienne Poan. Van Herk waited for the ball on the right post and popped it into the net. She scored again 10 minutes later on a scramble in front of the goal.

Laurie Fritz took a shot for Kennedy from 20 yards out that landed in the upper left corner of the goal with 30 seconds left in the game.

Kennedy (7-3-2, 4-0 in league), which won the league title last year, outshot Pacifica, 18-2.

“We knew this game could be the league title since we were both undefeated,” Kennedy Coach Bob Van Herk said. “We set the tempo from the start. It was a fast game. They kept trying to settle it down, but we threw them off with the pace.”

Pacifica, though, was thrown off before the game even started. The Mariners (2-2-6, 2-1) lost their starting goalie, Marcia Vojtech, during warm-ups when she pulled a muscle in her arm. Pacifica’s substitute goalies, Arvelo and Amy Smith, had 13 and three saves, respectively.
