Wayne Case of Thousand Oaks was among a group of five golfers who were three strokes off the pace after the first round Thursday of the Sanctuary Cove Classic.

Ronan Rafferty of Northern Ireland fired a 5-under-par 67, two strokes ahead of Australians Jeff Woodland, Richard Backwell and David Ecob and Canadian Rick Todd.

Case, 29, looked ready to challenge Rafferty for the lead when he was 4-under-par with two holes to play, but he bogeyed his last two holes.

“No one would have wanted to be me on the last two holes, but it still wasn’t a bad start,” Case said. “I played really well for 16 holes.”

Case had to sink a 25-foot putt on the last hole to salvage a bogey after finding a water hazard with his drive.
