Dominguez Hills Opens CCAA Play at Riverside and San Bernardino

The Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s basketball team, winners of five of its past seven nonconference games, opens California Collegiate Athletic Assn. play at UC Riverside at 7:30 tonight.

On Saturday, the Toros will visit Cal State San Bernardino for an 8:05 p.m. game.

Despite their success in nonconference play, the Toros (8-5) are expected to have difficulty in both games. Riverside, which has reached the NCAA Division II playoffs four seasons in a row, is 11-1, and San Bernardino, which has joined the CCAA this season after competing as a Division III independent, is 7-6.

Riverside, which has won nine games in a row, has been led by senior guard Gene Altamirano, who averages 13.7 points per game. Forward Chris Hantgin is at 11.4 and swingman Anthony Jenkins is at 11.3.

San Bernardino, which will meet Dominguez Hills for the first time, has five players averaging in double figures, led by guard Develle Walker and forward DeShang Weaver at 14.3 points. Forward Steve Hickey averages 8.6 rebounds.

Dominguez Hills has been led by senior forward Michael Moore and freshman guard Chris Thompson, who average 9.8 points apiece. The Toros have seven players averaging between 7.7 and 9.8 points.

On defense, the Toros have forced an average of 17 turnovers and are allowing only 64 points a game.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s basketball team, hoping to improve on last season’s 2-8 conference record, opens CCAA play with games against Chapman tonight and Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday.

Dominguez Hills, which won four of its past five nonconference games, will play host to Chapman at 7:30 tonight and visit San Bernardino at 5:45 p.m. Saturday.

Chapman enters conference play at 6-6; San Bernardino is 6-7.

Dominguez Hills (8-7) defeated Chapman, 58-57, in a nonconference game Dec. 28 in Carson. But Chapman has a 22-10 lead in the overall series and has not lost to Dominguez Hills in conference play since the 1987-88 season.

Chapman is led by guard Linda Kirby, who ranks among CCAA leaders with averages of 12.6 points, 3.8 assists and 2.5 steals.

San Bernardino, which lost, 67-53, to Dominguez Hills in the Cal Baptist tournament last week in Riverside, is led by guard Rachel Daugherty and front line players Kim Hansen and Kelly O’Brien. Daugherty averages 11.4 points and Hansen 10.4. O’Brien is averaging a team-leading 7.8 rebounds.

The top offensive player for Dominguez Hills is senior forward Cheri Bullet, who averages 14.3 points and 10 rebounds. Two other players scoring in double figures are sophomore guard Karee Bonde at 10.7 and junior center Dionne Vanlandingham at 10.4.

Mexico’s Mauro Gutierrez will fight Jose Castro of Westminster in a super-lightweight bout at the Forum Monday night.

Gutierrez is 45-15-5 with 29 knockouts, and Castro is 16-2-1 with 10 knockouts.

In other featured bouts on the card, Jose Martinez will fight Gaby Romero in a featherweight bout, and Ysaias Zamudio will meet Absalon Briseno in a flyweight bout.

Preliminaries open the program at 7 p.m.

The annual Harbor College baseball school, a two-day camp for youths ages 7 to 17, will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 18 and 19 at the school’s baseball field in Wilmington.

The cost is $55. Registration will be accepted through the first day of the camp.
