COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UNLV Hands Titan Women Their Fifth Straight Loss

Cal State Fullerton, which opened the season by winning five of its first six games, lost its fifth straight, falling to Nevada Las Vegas, 74-49, in a Big West Conference women’s basketball game Friday night at Las Vegas.

The defeat was the Titans’ worst since an 82-45 loss to the Rebels during the 1989-90 season.

Las Vegas (4-4, 2-0) opened with a 12-0 spurt. Claudette Jackson put Fullerton (5-6, 0-2) on the scoreboard 6 minutes 4 seconds into the game with two free throws. She hit two more 2:31 later, but the Rebels followed with an 8-0 run for a 22-4 advantage, and led by at least 14 points the rest of the game.

The Titans did not score a basket until Jackson’s layup 8:42 before halftime.

Jackson, who made four of 17 shots from the field and 14 of 17 free throws, was Fullerton’s leading scorer with 22 points. Joey Ray, who entered the game as the Titans’ leading scorer with a 16.9 average, was held to two points, missing eight of nine shots.

In another Big West women’s basketball game:

New Mexico State 96, UC Irvine 70--The Anteaters (4-8, 0-3) made 10 of 34 shots (29.4%) and committed 16 turnovers during the first half, en route to their third consecutive loss.

In the National Collegiate Tennis Classic:

Scott Advances--Danielle Scott, a Corona del Mar High graduate and Arizona senior, advanced to the quarterfinals with two victories, defeating Luann Klimchock of Arizona State, 6-4, 6-1, and Kim Shasby of Stanford, 6-4, 6-2.

On the men’s side, Jon Leach, a USC sophomore and Laguna Beach High graduate, was eliminated in the second round by third-seeded Mark Knowles of UCLA, 6-2, 6-4. Leach defeated Chris Cocotos of Stanford, 6-4, 7-5, in the first round.

In nonconference women’s swimming:

UC Irvine 180, Pepperdine 118--Freshman Laurel Hooper won the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyles at Crawford Hall pool.
