Dave Dravecky, the former Padre and San Francisco Giant left-handed pitcher whose left arm was amputated because of cancer last year, will participate in the Pro-Am round of the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines Municipal. The Pro-Am will be Feb. 19, the day before the four-day PGA event.

FOOTBALL

Ron Slack, San Diego State’s leading rusher in 1989, was one of four former Aztecs selected in the opening day of the Professional Spring Football League draft in Las Vegas.

Slack, who ran for 914 yards and 13 touchdowns as SDSU went 6-5-1 in 1989, was chosen in the 20th round by the Nevada Aces.

Vince Warren, who caught 105 passes for the Aztecs from 1981-1985 and played with the 1986 New York Giants, was picked in the 15th round by Nevada.

Mario Mitchell, an SDSU defensive back and a 1988 co-captain, was a territorial choice by Nevada, as was tight end Lee Brannon. The Aces also picked Dokie Williams, a 1978 El Camino High graduate who later played for UCLA and the Raiders, in the territorial phase.

SAILING

The new America’s Cup crews are limited to 16 people, plus a 17th who’s just along for the ride.

Laurence R. Grunstein, president of Citizen Watch Co., one of Team Dennis Conner’s corporate sponsors, will be aboard Stars & Stripes today in the first defender trial race against America 3’s Defiant, skippered by Buddy Melges.
