COLLEGE BASKETBALL / NATIONAL ROUNDUP : Mourning Fouls Out, Georgetown Falls, 74-62

Dave Johnson scored 23 points and No. 20 Syracuse took advantage of Alonzo Mourning’s foul trouble to defeat No. 22 Georgetown, 74-62, Wednesday night in a Big East Conference game at Landover, Md.

Lawrence Moten’s three-point play gave Syracuse (12-1 overall, 4-1 in the Big East) a 42-39 lead with 15:01 left.

Mourning picked up his fifth foul with 12:32 remaining, but the Big East allows a player six personals.

Mourning was in and out of the lineup before fouling out with 1:48 left and Syracuse holding a 68-60 lead. Mourning had 17 points for the Hoyas (9-3, 2-2).

No. 1 Duke 110, North Carolina State 75--Christian Laettner scored 23 points and the Blue Devils trounced the Wolfpack in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Durham, N.C.

Tom Gugliotta had 22 points for N.C. State (7-6, 1-2), while Bobby Hurley and Thomas Hill added 19 points each for Duke (11-0, 5-0).

No. 10 Kentucky 84, Vanderbilt 71--Jamal Mashburn scored nine of his 21 points in a two-minute span late in the game to lead the Wildcats in a Southeastern Conference game at Nashville, Tenn.

Vanderbilt (8-5, 1-3) had a 38-33 halftime lead, but Kentucky (13-2, 4-0) took the lead for good, 58-55, on Richie Farmer’s three-pointer with 9:43 left.

No. 11 Michigan State 78, Northwestern 61--Shawn Respert scored all the points as the Spartans took a 7-0 lead in 67 seconds and defeated the Wildcats in a Big Ten game at East Lansing, Mich.

Respert scored 17 points for Michigan State (12-1, 2-1). Northwestern (7-6, 0-3) took its 25th consecutive conference loss.

No. 12 Arkansas 99, Mississippi State 78--Roosevelt Wallace scored 10 of his 12 points in a late 25-6 surge and the Razorbacks rallied to beat the Bulldogs in an SEC game at Fayetteville, N.C.

Oliver Miller added 22 points for Arkansas (14-3, 3-1). Tony Watts scored 25 for Mississippi State (10-4, 2-2).

Purdue 65, No. 15 Michigan 60--Woody Austin scored 19 points to lead the Boilermakers in a Big Ten game at Ann Arbor, Mich. Purdue (10-5, 2-1) beat Michigan (9-3, 1-2) for the fifth consecutive time.
