In other Avocado League games:

Oceanside 58, Escondido 51--Despite being listed as the No. 1 defensive team in the North County, Oceanside opened Avocado League play by going 0-3 before Friday’s victory. The difference this time out was better shooting than in earlier games. Oceanside was 24 of 57 from the field. Carl Mathis led Oceanside (5-9, 1-3) with 21 points and eight assists. Teammate David Marrero scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

San Pasqual 78, San Marcos 63--San Pasqual (6-9, 3-1) came back from a 19-2 deficit. The turnaround started at the beginning of the second quarter when the Eagles came out in their full-court press. David Durst led the way, scoring 15 of his 21 points in the first half. In the final two quarters, Ernie Silva had the hot hand, scoring 18 of his 21 points. Teammate Shane Carlson added 17.

El Camino 82, Ramona 62--Chris Dade’s 20 points and six assists figured into sixth-ranked El Camino’s victory. Sky Harrison (18 points) and Mike Booker (16 points, seven rebounds) were also instrumental for the Wildcats, who opened up the scoring at the end of the second quarter.

For Ramona (5-7, 1-3), Rusty Hoss scored 32 points and Cody Cunningham added 18 points and 11 rebounds.

City Central League

Lincoln 93, Hoover 54--Lincoln opened league play in customary Lincoln fashion--by picking up both its intensity and tempo. The Hornets, led by Berry Randle’s 24 points and 15 rebounds, scored at least 20 points in every quarter. Archie Robinson, who finished with 13 points, also passed for nine assists as Lincoln improved to 10-7, 1-0. Tony Maxwell led hoover with 19 points.

Madison 77, San Diego 58--San Diego’s full-court pressure gave the Cavers an 11-point lead over Madison four minutes into the game. But when Madison broke the press, it cruised to a 19-point victory at home. Madison led at halftime 47-24. Matt Baker’s 26 points led Madison. Teammate Shane Lance hit four three-point baskets and finished with 23 points, and Gerald Hunter scored 14 and grabbed 10 rebounds. Tavie Mason led San Diego with 16 points.

City Eastern League

Morse 63, Serra 54--Morse (10-4, 1-0) had three players score in double figures: Taurein Bunche (19), Byron Steele (16) and Maurice Vickers (14). Serra (7-5, 0-1) was led by Justin Wible (12 points).

City Western League

University City 50, USDHS 42--Barry Waits scored 10 points and passed for eight assists to lead University City (9-5, 1-0) in this longtime rivalry. Teammate Chris Williams scored 14 and pulled down eight rebounds. For USDHS (2-12, 0-1), Tim O’Connor led with 16 points.

Kearny 73, Mission Bay 28--No. 4 Kearny (16-1, 1-0), playing without star guard Ali Nayab, led 35-21 by halftime and cleared the bench in the third quarter when they outscored Mission Bay, 29-2. Demetrius Brown scored 25 points to lead the Komets, who got 12 assists and 10 points from Tariq Salihi, filling in for Nayab at point guard. Kenny Junious added 13 points for the Komets. Mission Bay fell to 5-11, 0-1.

Grossmont 3-A League

Granite Hills 63, Mt. Miguel 62--Troy Meier hit a free throw with about 20 seconds remaining to break a 62-62 tie, and when Mt. Miguel missed a desperation shot with five seconds remaining, Granite Hills had the victory in hand. Meier finished with 22 points. Teammate Mark Kluge was seven for eight from the field and finished with 16 as Granite Hills improved to 9-5, 1-0.

Marcos Gallardo’s 31 points weren’t enought for Mt. Miguel (8-9, 1-3).

Metro Conference

Chula Vista 78, Hilltop 63--Led by sophomore forward Alberto Marzan’s 22 points and 21 rebounds, the Spartans fought off a desperate Hilltop rally in the third quarter to preserve the victory, running their record to 11-7 overall, 4-1 in league.

The Spartans’ Jerome Green, the junior guard whose 27.9-point average leads the county, had 25 points and guard Lamar Bailey contributed eight assists.

Hilltop (1-14, 0-5), which was led by forward Jorge Munoz with 18 points and guard Earl Hearvey with 14, closed Chula Vista’s lead to 52-48 in the third quarter before the Spartans pulled away to stay.

Bonita Vista 81, Sweetwater 56--After falling behind by 11 in the first quarter, Bonita Vista (8-8, 3-1) slowly pecked away at the lead, then outscored Sweetwater 47-21 in the second half. Three Barons finished with more than 15 points: Gerald Rhoden, who scored 18 of his 20 in the second half; Chaz Abbott, who in addition to scoring 16 points pulled down seven rebounds; and Frank Perlata, who also finished with 16.

Castle Park 57, Montgomery 52--Castle Park, which lost a squeeker to Sweetwater earlier in the week, was on the other side of a close game. Bobby Stanton and Dillon Franklin eached scored 14 as Castle Park (7-7, 3-2) rebounded. Ray Lozano paced Montgomery with 20 points.

Palomar League

Vista 71, San Dieguito 58--Shane Jager’s 20 points paced Vista. Teammates Jason Barnes, who fouled out with 4:31 remaining, and Nils Michals added 14 points apiece for the Panthers (10-5, 4-0). Bryan Goodbody’s 14 points led San Dieguito.

Poway 89, Orange Glen 47--No. 3 Poway (14-4, 3-1) had four players score in double figures and another, point guard Todd Fortney, who didn’t score at all but dished out 11 assists. The recipients of Fortney’s passes included Justin Kruse (17 points), Mitch Palmer (17) Chad Wellon (15) and Kyle Milling (11). Orange Glen’s Brian Morsch, who finished with a game-high 21 points, directed a four-corners stall that began with 3:40 remaining. It lasted until 1:50 was left and likely kept Poway from reaching 100 points. Orange Glen fell to 2-14, 0-4.

Torrey Pines 73, Rancho Buena Vista 36--Scot Pollard scored 21 and Craig Brown had 19 to lead No. 1 Torrey Pines (13-3, 4-0). Steve Lemery added 12 for the Falcons, who shot 63% from the field (29 of 46) and forced 28 turnovers. Abe Ajlouny led RBV (7-10, 0-4) with 12 points. The Longhorns made only three field goals in the second half.

Mt. Carmel 70, Fallbrook 58--No. 9 Mt. Carmel (10-5, 3-1) scored 26 points in a decisive fourth quarter, making 12 of 18 free-throws to pull away. Derek Wessel led the winners with 17 points. Jason Sammons added 14 and a team-high nine rebounds and Scott Schoenwald scored 15 points. Forward Chris Miller scored 37 points for Fallbrook (11-5, 1-3) including 15 in the fourth quarter, but the rest of the team only got three points in the final period.

Nonleague

Crawford 64, Patrick Henry 60--Sophomore Altie Parker (eight points) hit six free throws in the final minutes to lift Crawford (2-12). Kadir Nelson had 18 points, Rahmon Anderson had 14 and Jhuan Williams had 11.
