COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Chapman’s Turnovers Are Fatal in Loss to Cal Poly Pomona

When Chapman could get the shots Saturday night, the Panthers usually made them.

But 23 turnovers limited the Panthers to 43 shots in a 77-65 California Collegiate Athletic Assn. loss to Cal Poly Pomona at Pomona’s Kellogg Gym.

Chapman made 23 of 43 shots from the field (53.4%), while the Broncos were 30 of 61 (49.2%).

Chapman trailed, 31-25, at halftime, and was down by as many as 25 points in the second half.

Rog Middleton led the Panthers (6-10, 1-3 in the CCAA) with 20 points and eight rebounds, and Brian Kenney added 15 points.

Ken Scalmanini had 17 points and Andre Harrell 12 for Pomona (11-6, 3-1).

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s basketball:

Cal Poly Pomona 68, Chapman 59--The Broncos made 23 of 39 free throws to 12 of 19 for the Panthers at Hutton Sports Center.

Chapman (6-9, 0-3) was called for 30 fouls and had three players foul out, including Julie King, who had a game-high 25 points.

Mildred Conston and Leslie Ellis each had 16 for Cal Poly Pomona (12-5, 3-0).

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:

Christ College Irvine 85, Southern California College 71--Kaisa Kepsu had 20 points and Gitte Mejer had 18 points before fouling out for Christ College (14-2, 3-0), which led, 47-33, at the half. Mejer, a 6-foot-1 center, added nine rebounds. Stacy Kirch had 12 points and Genevieve Graff had 11 for the Eagles. Cyndie Lyons had 24 points and nine rebounds for the Vanguards (8-13, 0-4).

In nonconference men’s gymnastics:

UCLA 267.05, Cal State Fullerton 177.40--Titan Karl Nove was third in the all-around, but Bruins finished in the top three in all six individual events at the John Wooden Center.
