Gary Kubiak, John Elway’s backup quarterback on the Denver Broncos, was named assistant football coach at Texas A&M;, his alma mater, on Saturday.

“I plan to change our offense to more of a pro-style attack, and Gary’s background should be helpful as we move in that direction,” Coach R.C. Slocum said.

Kubiak, 30, just completed his ninth season as Elway’s backup. In his final appearance, in which the Broncos lost, 10-7, to Buffalo in the AFC Championship Game, Kubiak spelled an injured Elway and completed 11 of 12 passes for 136 yards and scored the game’s only offensive touchdown. He retired after the game.

“I’ve known for quite some time I wanted to become a football coach when my playing days were finished,” Kubiak said. “I think Coach Slocum has done an outstanding job here and being a part of his coaching staff is an honor.”

Kubiak holds Texas A&M; records for most touchdown passes in a game (six, against Rice in 1982); most touchdown passes in a season (19 in 1982); longest touchdown pass (92 yards to Don Jones against Louisiana Tech in 1981); and most completions in a game (32 against Texas Christian in 1982).
