COLLEGE BASKETBALL NATIONAL ROUNDUP : Division II Team Scares No. 19 N.C. Charlotte

North Carolina Charlotte earned its national ranking this season by winning consistently and defeating teams with bigger reputations.

But Thursday night, No. 19 North Carolina Charlotte was almost upset by a Division II school.

Delano Johnson made a shot with 1.5 seconds left in overtime to give the 49ers an 82-80 victory over Johnson C. Smith at Charlotte, N.C.

“I’ve been involved in a lot of games like this in my career, where the ball looks square most of the time,” UNCC Coach Jeff Mullins said. “We were out of sync all game.”

Johnson C. Smith (11-4) rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit to force the overtime. Joel Jordan’s follow shot extended Johnson C. Smith’s first lead to 77-73 with 3:05 left in overtime.

Charlotte (13-2) came back with a five-point run that Henry Williams capped with a three-point basket with 2:05 left. Rodney Odom, who transferred to Charlotte from UCLA, blocked three shots and made a short baseline hook shot for an 80-77 lead with 49 seconds left.

UNCC made only 16 of 31 free throws.

No. 12 Missouri 77, Notre Dame 68--Anthony Peeler scored 20 of his 28 points in the second half to lead the Tigers to victory at South Bend, Ind., spoiling Notre Dame’s first home game in 48 days.

Missouri (13-2) held off a late surge by the Irish by making six free throws in the final 33 seconds.

Elmer Bennett scored with 49 seconds left to pull the Irish to within three points. But Melvin Booker, Jamal Coleman and Jevon Crudup each made two free throws to secure the victory for the Tigers.

LaPhonso Ellis scored 25 points for Notre Dame (5-8).

No. 17 Oklahoma 130, Oral Roberts 89--Brent Price scored 33 points and the Sooners made 15 three-point shots during the nonconference victory at Norman, Okla.

Damon Patterson added 20 points for Oklahoma (12-3), which fell two three-point baskets shy of the school’s single-game record.

Ray Thompson scored 33 points and had 14 rebounds for Oral Roberts (6-14).

Florida State 83, No. 18 Georgia Tech 79--Bob Sura scored 16 of his 18 points in the final 12 1/2 minutes to help the Seminoles overcome a 12-point deficit for the upset in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Atlanta.

It was the fourth Atlantic Coast Conference road victory for Florida State (11-4, 4-2), making its conference debut this season.

Jon Barry scored 32 points for Georgia Tech (13-5, 3-3), which lost for the third time in four games.

No. 20 Louisville 88, Southern Mississippi 74--Dwayne Morton and Everick Sullivan each scored 20 points in a Metro Conference game at Louisville, Ky., as the Cardinals earned the school’s 1,200th victory.

Louisville (11-3, 2-2) made nine of 14 three-point shots and scored 20 points off 17 Southern Mississippi turnovers.

Clarence Weatherspoon scored 27 points for Southern Mississippi (7-8, 1-1).

No. 23 Texas El Paso 77, San Diego State 54--Marlon Maxey came off the bench to score 24 points, leading the Miners to a Western Athletic Conference victory at San Diego.

David Van Dyke added 18 points and 11 rebounds for UTEP (15-1, 5-0), which has won 11 in a row.

John Molle scored 17 points and Joe McNaull added 15 for San Diego State (2-14, 0-4), which lost its ninth consecutive game.

No. 25 Nevada Las Vegas 58, Fresno State 50--Dexter Boney scored 16 points at Las Vegas to help the Rebels stay unbeaten in the Big West Conference.

UNLV (16-2, 8-0) extended its nation-leading home winning streak to 43 games. Fresno State (11-7, 2-4) dropped its third consecutive game.

Melvin Love and J.R. Rider each scored 11 points for UNLV.

Tim Breaux of Wyoming (10-6, 2-2) scored 21 points in the Cowboys’ 72-67 Western Athletic Conference victory over Brigham Young (12-3, 5-2) at Laramie, Wyo. . . . Byron Wilson scored 21 points and Jimmy Soto added 18 to lead Utah (12-5, 2-3) to a 68-51 WAC victory over Air Force (5-11, 0-5) at Air Force Academy, Colo.

Carlito DaSilva scored 20 points and had nine rebounds as Utah State (10-5, 4-2) defeated San Jose State (1-3, 0-6), 80-63, in a Big West Conference game at Logan, Utah. . . . Ron Reis scored 13 points to lead Santa Clara (7-10, 3-1) to a 73-52 West Coast Conference victory Gonzaga (11-5, 1-2) at Santa Clara.

Reserve Wayman Strickland of San Diego (11-6, 3-1) scored 18 points in a 92-76 WCC victory over Portland (8-8, 1-2) at San Diego. . . . Daren Engellant scored 18 and had 14 rebounds for Montana (16-1, 5-0) in a 73-58 Big Sky Conference victory over Idaho (9-9, 3-3) at Missoula, Mont.
