Field of 16,000 Is Expected for Super Bowl Run

As many as 16,000 are expected to participate in the Redondo Beach Super Bowl Sunday 10-K Run and 5-K Walk for all ages starting at Beryl Street and Harbor Drive.

The 10-K run starts at 8 a.m. and the 5-K walk at 8:10 a.m.

Among the favorites in the men’s 10-K run are defending champion Thom Hunt of Coronado, who won last year’s race in a time of 28 minutes 52 seconds and is regarded as one of the best in the world at 10,000 meters, and Matt Giusto of Portola Valley, a former Arizona standout who won the NCAA 5,000-meter title in 1988.

The women’s 10-K field is led by Wilma Van Onna of the Netherlands, who won last year’s race in 33:06. Other contenders include Jill Hunter, who competed in the 3,000 meters for Great Britain in the 1988 Summer Olympics, and Canada’s Sue Lee, who finished eighth in the 10,000 meters at the 1988 Summer Olympics.

The entry fee is $20. Race-day registration starts at 6 a.m.

In what could be its most difficult week of play in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn., the Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s basketball team will play host to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo tonight at 8:05 and Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday night at 7:30.

The Toros are 10-7 overall and 2-2 in the CCAA, San Luis Obispo is 14-3 and 2-2 and Bakersfield 14-3 and 3-1.

San Luis Obispo defeated NCAA Division I opponent Pepperdine, 76-72, on Dec. 28 and UC Riverside, 73-70, last week. Pepperdine leads the West Coast Conference and Riverside is ranked 13th in the NCAA Division II poll.

San Luis Obispo center Shawn Kirkeby leads the conference in scoring at 18.2 and is second in rebounding at nine. Guard Jeff Oliver averages 12.4 points and has made 46.7% of his three-point shots.

Bakersfield is tied for the conference lead with Cal Poly Pomona and Riverside. The Roadrunners have won or shared the CCAA title three of the past four seasons and reached the Division II final four last season.

Bakersfield also has one of the CCAA’s best players in 6-5 forward Beau Redstone, who averages 14.1 points and a conference-leading 10.6 rebounds. Three others scoring in double figures are swingman Tyrone Pollard at 11.3, guard Fred Eckles at 11 and guard Kenny Warren at 10.6.

Dominguez Hills has been led by 6-foot-7 senior forward Michael Moore, who averages 10.4 points and 3.7 rebounds, and 6-1 freshman guard Chris Thompson, who leads the team in scoring at 10.7 and assists at 2.2.

The Toros were 1-1 last week, losing 73-68 to Pomona and beating Cal State L.A., 72-53.

After a 0-2 start in West Coast Conference play, the Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team will play host to St. Mary’s at 5:20 p.m. today and San Francisco at 5:20 p.m. Saturday.

Loyola, which has won only two of its last 10 games, is 6-9 overall, St. Mary’s is 12-3 and 1-1 in the WCC and San Francisco is 9-6 and 1-1.

St. Mary’s has defeated the Lions six consecutive times over the past three seasons and is 5-0 on the road this season.

St. Mary’s has been led by senior forward Natalie Rynn, who averages 13.7 points and 7.5 rebounds. Junior guard Christina Marshall, the team’s floor leader, averages 6.3 assists.

San Francisco has played well recently, having won three of four games. The Lady Dons have four players averaging in double figures, led by senior forward Joy Boyenga at 16.2 points and center Marlene Henderson at 13.

Loyola has been struggling offensively. The Lions have not scored more than 55 points in their last seven games.

The only Lion averaging in double figures is senior forward Joelle Longobardi at 15.4 points. She also averages a team-leading 7.3 rebounds.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s basketball team will play California Collegiate Athletic Assn. games today and Saturday.

The Toros (10-8 overall, 2-1 in the CCAA) will play host to Cal State Los Angeles at 5:45 p.m. today before traveling to 10-time defending conference champion Cal Poly Pomona at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Dominguez Hills lost a road game to UC Riverside, 56-51, in overtime, last week. The Toros are led by senior forward Cheri Bullet, who ranks among conference leaders in scoring at 14.6 and rebounding at 10.1.

Junior center Dionne Vanlandingham is averaging 10.5 points and sophomore guard Karee Bonde is averaging 10.2.

Cal State L.A. (8-10, 2-2) has won two conference games in a row. They are led by former South Bay prep standouts Renee Dabney and Kim Bly.

Dabney, who played at Morningside High, leads the CCAA in scoring at 15.5. Bly, who played at Hawthorne High, is tied for second in CCAA scoring at 15.2. Senior center Traci Daniels averages 14.4 points.

Pomona (13-5, 4-0) is ranked 17th in NCAA Division II. The Toros have yet to defeat Pomona in 22 games.

Bronco junior forward Carrie Stritenberg averages 15.2 points and 8.3 rebounds and sophomore center Mildred Conston, a transfer from Nevada Las Vegas, averages 12.1 and 10.2.
