Defending champion Carlos Sainz of Spain took the lead in the Monte Carlo Rally, passing former champion Didier Auriol of France.
Sainz, in a Toyota, had a total time of 3 hours 49 minutes 8 seconds after the six specials of the day, a total of 120 miles.
He had an edge of 49 seconds over Auriol, who dropped to second after the last special, from Sisteron to Thoard in southern France.
