HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Cleveland Defeats Granada Hills in Overtime, 92-90

Jeremy DeGracia made a three-point basket under heavy pressure in the closing seconds of regulation and Cleveland High went on to defeat host Granada Hills, 92-90, Wednesday in overtime in a North Valley League basketball game.

Shawn Bankhead of Cleveland (6-11, 3-2 in league play) scored 38 points despite facing a diamond-and-one defense.

Omari Miles had 28 points for Granada Hills (3-13, 0-5).

In other boys’ basketball games:

North Hollywood 68, South Gate 64--Host North Hollywood erased a 39-34 halftime deficit in a nonleague game.

Robert Hill led the Huskies (19-1, 4-0) with a game-high 27 points, DeShawn Harvey added 15 and Damon Ollie scored nine points and had 15 rebounds.

Birmingham 77, Poly 75 (OT)--Anthony Sarkissian and Greg Whiteside (23 points) each made one free throw in the final 10 seconds of overtime to seal the win for host Birmingham (8-9, 4-4) in the East Valley League game.

Juan DeLuna scored 21 points to lead Poly (7-8, 2-3). Whiteside made his first appearance since being declared academically ineligible in December.

Grant 62, Monroe 48--Wayne Carlisle had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and three others scored in double figures, leading Grant (11-6, 6-2) in a Mid-Valley League game.

Darwin Alfelor added 14 points, Mark Small had 13 and Chris Fields had 12 for Grant.

LaMarco Rich scored 11 points for Monroe, which led, 19-11, after one quarter and 22-21 at the half.

El Camino Real 73, San Fernando 62--Sam Sarpong had 22 points and eight assists for host El Camino Real in the West Valley League game. Leading, 15-10, after the first quarter, the Conquistadores (4-9, 2-3) blew the game open in the second period, outscoring San Fernando, 23-10.

Kenyth Henry had 16 points, six rebounds and five assists for El Camino Real, and teammate Markee Brown added 16 points and nine rebounds.

Verdugo Hills 73, Wilson 70--Eddie Powell had 25 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists for host Verdugo Hills in the Northern Conference game.

Chan Cornish added 18 points and 10 rebounds for Verdugo Hills (8-8, 2-3). Wilson dropped to 2-3 in league play.

Sherman Oaks CES 72, Sylmar 54--Mitch Shenkin scored 19 points to lead visiting Sherman Oaks CES in an East Valley League game.

Khalif Muhammad added 12 points for Sherman Oaks CES. Rodney Smith led Sylmar with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Van Nuys 44, Canoga Park 42--Eric Grayson had 17 points and 13 assists to lead Van Nuys in a Mid-Valley League game.

Simi Valley 71, Channel Islands 62--Noe Noyola scored 26 points for host Channel Islands, but Simi Valley won the Marmonte League game with superior depth.

Danny Alexander (17 points), Gordon Stolla (16), Ryan Briggs (15) and Jason Conmay (12) each scored in double figures for Simi Valley (17-4, 8-2).

Thousand Oaks 67, Camarillo 55--Andrew Borg scored a game-high 19 points and teammate Paul Foster added 14 to lead Thousand Oaks (14-6, 9-1) in a Marmonte League game at Camarillo.

Newbury Park 78, Royal 57--Host Newbury Park (11-8, 6-4) completed a season sweep of the Highlanders behind Sean McKeown (26 points) in the Marmonte League game. Robert Fick and Jason Peterson each added 16 points. Royal is 5-5 in league play.

Agoura 55, Westlake 38--Jeff Niemann scored 15 points and Eddie Corridori added 14, leading visiting Agoura (13-6, 6-4) to a Marmonte League win. The Chargers forced 13 first-quarter turnovers and held Westlake scoreless in that period.

Alemany 93, Chaminade 52--Four Alemany players scored in double figures to pace a Mission League rout. Richard Dice scored 18 points, Doug Tait added 16, Mike Smith had 14, and Brian McConnel finished with 12 for host Alemany (12-10, 6-4).

St. Bonaventure 57, Moorpark 52--Host St. Bonaventure scored 24 points in the fourth quarter to come from behind in the Tri-Valley League game. Chris Cattanach scored seven of his game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter for St. Bonaventure (9-10, 1-5).

Rio Mesa 66, Hueneme 60--Tim Nunnery scored 18 points and John Lemuz added 12 to pace host Rio Mesa (8-10, 4-6) in a Channel League game.

Tony Smith scored a game-high 24 points for Hueneme.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

San Fernando 39, Taft 35--Berni Samaniego scored 13 points and had 12 rebounds to lead host San Fernando (10-4, 2-3) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Poly 33, Birmingham 15--Crystal Gilespe and Sandra Olden each had nine points for host Poly (3-9, 2-5) in an East Valley League game.

Grant 57, Monroe 43--Nicole Baynes scored 23 points and had 17 rebounds to lead visiting Grant (9-3, 6-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

North Hollywood 55, South Gate 41--Suzi Shimoyama scored 13 points and had eight assists for the visiting Huskies (13-3) in a nonleague game.

Granada Hills 50, Chatsworth 23--The visiting Highlanders jumped to a 22-0 lead in the Northwest Valley League game. Erica Mertes had 30 rebounds for Chatsworth.

Reseda 63, Cleveland 19--Michelle Brewer scored 28 points and had 10 rebounds to pace visiting Reseda in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

El Camino Real 43, Kennedy 39--El Camino Real’s Myrta Ramezani scored all of her game-high 13 points in the second half in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Kennedy. Shaneya Harris and Charlene Ching each scored 12 points for Kennedy.

Sylmar 41, Sherman Oaks 37--Shantye Morgan had 18 points and 14 rebounds for visiting Sylmar (5-7, 4-4) in an East Valley League game. The Spartans trailed, 27-21, after three quarters.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Notre Dame 1, St. Paul 0--Curt Wolff scored in the first half to give host Notre Dame (8-4-2, 8-1) a Mission League victory.

Birmingham 3, Canoga Park 2--Juan Hueso, Vladimir Artiga and Jason Halpern each scored for Birmingham (5-0-2 in conference play) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Canoga Park.

Taft 3, Chatsworth 3--Taft’s Jose Aguas and Chatsworth’s Dan Nash each scored a pair of goals in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Taft.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

La Reina 3, Oak Park 1--Jaimie Armstrong scored two goals in the second half to help visiting La Reina (13-2-2, 7-0) win a pivotal Tri-Valley League match. Oak Park is 12-3-2, 5-2.

El Camino Real 2, Palisades 1--Courtney Henderson scored two goals to lift the Conquistadores (6-2-1, 3-2-1) to a Northwest Valley League victory.
