Ventura College eclipsed the century mark in Saturday’s Western State Conference North Division basketball game against visiting Moorpark.

Not on the scoreboard, though.

The Pirates took 102 shots from the field in their 93-61 win--an average of 2.55 shots a minute, or one every 23.5 seconds.

The Pirates (24-4, 3-0 in division play) dominated the offensive boards, taking two or more shots on 22 possessions, and they took more shots in the second half (55) than Moorpark (47) did in the game.

And things could have been worse for Moorpark had Ventura--which made 38 baskets--shot better.

The Pirates shot 37.3%, even though starters Reggie Phillips (seven for 10, 14 points), Stephane Brown (six for 10, 17 points) and D’Mitri Rideout (six for 10, 12 points) all shot better than 50%.

The rest of the team was a combined 19 for 72 (26.4%). . . .

D.J. Jackson of Antelope Valley is still the leading scorer in the state among men’s junior college players. Jackson was averaging 29.3 points entering Wednesday’s game against Chaffey.

Jackson is the fifth-ranked rebounder in the state (12.5 avg.), but his chances of moving to the top are slim--Foothill’s Tony Gillette leads with 17 rebounds a game. . . .

Percy Fisher, Cal State Northridge’s 6-foot-7 backup center, has scored in double figures in five of the Matadors’ past seven games and his scoring average of 9.1 is now third best on the team. . . .

Andre Chevalier, the Matadors’ point guard, has broken into double figures in scoring average. A 19-point effort against Cal State Sacramento last Saturday improved his average to 10.1. Swingman Keith Gibbs continues to lead Northridge with a 14.2 average. In the past two games, Gibbs has 15 assists. . . .

The Redlands men’s basketball team was averaging 27.8 three-point attempts each game going into Saturday’s contest against Cal Lutheran. But the Bulldogs got off only 14 against the Kingsmen, making six in a 96-94 loss.

Miscellaneous: A season-high crowd of 739--more than double the usual number--attended Cal Lutheran’s home game against Redlands.

Women’s basketball: Cynthia Llerenas, projected as a backup point guard at the start of the season, leads Northridge with 591 minutes played, despite starting only 11 of 21 games.

The All-Western State Conference selection at Pierce is one three-point basket shy of tying the school single-season record of 25 set by Kristen Brinkema in 1988.

Llerenas, a junior, is averaging 5.2 points and 3.7 assists and has hit 24 of 79 three-point attempts. Senior Dawn Broline, who has made 10 of 34 three-point shots, is the Northridge career three-point leader with 45. . . .

Valley and Ventura each moved up a notch in this week’s J. C. Athletic Bureau rankings. Valley (22-3 at the start of the week) is ranked third and Ventura (20-6) is 12th.

Women’s track and field: Northridge freshman Teresa Strickland moved to sixth on the Matadors’ all-time list with her winning effort of 44 feet in the shotput in a double-dual meet against Fresno State and Northern Arizona at the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Saturday.

Statistics are current through Tuesday.
