PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Villa Park Wins, Shares Century Lead

The Villa Park boys’ basketball team defeated El Modena, 48-33, Wednesday night at Villa Park High School, giving the Spartans a share of first place in the Century League. The last time they led the league this late in the season was 1973.

Villa Park, El Modena and Santa Ana Valley are tied for first with 5-2 records.

Ryan MacArthur had 11 points and 12 rebounds for Villa Park (11-9). The Spartans also held El Modena center Aaron Aguilera, who was averaging 16 points per game, to a season-low six points. Mario Perez scored 16 points for El Modena (14-7).

In other Century League games:

Canyon 59, Orange 55--Canyon broke a tie by outscoring the Panthers, 18-14, in the final quarter.

Tony Walker had 19 points and Jim Dunning 14 for Canyon (10-11, 3-4). Jamie Worthem and Nic Demps each had 14 for Orange (8-12, 0-7).

Santa Ana Valley 53, Foothill 40--Anthony Porter scored 16 points for Santa Ana Valley (9-10, 5-2), which held Foothill to four third-quarter points. Jared Winger had 16 points for Foothill.

In Garden Grove League boys’ basketball:

Garden Grove 61, Los Amigos 56--Cornel Archer had 24 points and Scott Flores 16 for the Argonauts (8-11, 6-5).

Kennedy 71, Bolsa Grande 44--Jeff Cummins had 10 of his 18 points in the second quarter as the Fighting Irish outscored the Matadors, 18-4. Jermaine Galloway had 28 points and 13 rebounds for Kennedy (16-6, 11-0).

Rancho Alamitos 65, La Quinta 57--Ed Taylor and Helmut Bustamante each scored 11 points for Rancho Alamitos, which trailed, 21-20, at the half before outscoring La Quinta, 14-6, in the third quarter.

In Orange League boys’ basketball:

Brea-Olinda 61, Anaheim 35--Jason Celmer had 15 points for Brea (11-11, 6-1), which led, 36-16, at the half. Scott Hole added 10 points and Drew Hubbard had nine points and eight rebounds for the Wildcats.

Valencia 66, Magnolia 54--Demetirus Maltie had 21 points and 12 rebounds for host Magnolia (7-12, 1-6). Marc O’Brien scored 18 points and Tony Draft had 16 for Valencia (10-9, 3-4).

Western 53, Savanna 39--Chris Jackson had 18 points and Jason Etter had 13 points for host Western (5-2).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 68, Century 56--Jim Faulkner had 26 points before fouling out and Matt Fuerbringer added 13 before fouling out as the Eagles improved to 18-5, 6-1. Chris Lopez had 17 for Century (14-7, 3-4).

Laguna Beach 61, Costa Mesa 49--Laguna Beach missed their first four shots from the field and eight from the free-throw line and Costa Mesa jumped to an 18-6 lead in the first quarter before settling for a 18-9 lead in the quarter.

Costa Mesa maintained a seven-point halftime lead but the Artists (13-8, 3-4) outscored the Mustangs, 31-12, in the second half.

Taylor Butcher had 18 points, including four three-point shots, and Darren Gravley had 15 points for Laguna Beach.

Trabuco Hills 67, Laguna Hills 34--The Mustangs set a school record by allowing only 34 points, surpassing the previous mark of 38 set in December against El Toro.

Gavin Vanderputten led Trabuco Hills (17-5, 7-0) with 22 points and 17 rebounds and Brett Poulos added 14, including a game-high four three-pointers.

In the Sea View League:

Tustin 85, University 76--Derek Roche (24), Jentry Moore (18) and Maurice Fletcher (16) paced five Tillers in double figures for Tustin. Luis Venegas had 28 and Donnell Dowdy 21 for host University (8-14, 2-5).

Woodbridge 66, Newport Harbor 52--Ethan Twer scored 23 points for visiting Woodbridge (15-4, 6-1). Mark McAnlis scored 18 points, including four three-pointers for Newport Harbor (10-11, 2-5).

Saddleback 49, Corona del Mar 46--Corona del Mar (8-14, 1-6) trailed, 47-37, with three minutes remaining and scored the next nine points to close within one point with 30 seconds remaining. But a Luis Estrella steal and layup gave Saddleback (12-9, 4-3) a 49-46 lead with one second remaining.

In South Coast League boys’ basketball:

Capistrano Valley 97, San Clemente 63--Eric Seiffert had 18 points, Steve Ranson and Geremy Garrett each had 15 points and Tom Airey had 13 points, including four three-point baskets, for visiting Capistrano Valley (7-0 in league). Marcus Guild had 24 points for San Clemente (2-5).

El Toro 46, Dana Hills 43--Mike Meier had 18 points and Jason Senik 15 for visiting El Toro (8-13, 4-3). Kevin Baden and Justin Hinsey each had 13 points for Dana Hills (2-18, 1-6).

Irvine 56, Mission Viejo 46--Tied, 34-34, with three minutes remaining, Irvine (19-4, 6-1) outscored Mission Viejo, 10-0, over the next five minutes to put the game out of reach. Jado Lee had 19 points and Eric Ambrozich 17 for Irvine. Mission Viejo is 3-17, 1-6.

In Garden Grove League girls’ basketball:

Kennedy 48, Bolsa Grande 22--Lynly Matsumoto had 22 points, including five three-pointers, and seven rebounds for host Kennedy (13-7, 8-3).
