A National City woman who left her 1-day-old baby in a pickup truck at a shopping mall pleaded guilty Monday to child abandonment.
Adriana Avila, 24, faces sentencing April 16 in San Diego Municipal Court. The baby girl, found in the truck Jan. 11 at the Plaza Bonita shopping mall, has been placed in a foster home.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Dave Rubin said Avila faces a maximum sentence of three years in prison, but said he would not object to a sentence of one year in local custody.
Avila entered her plea before Judge Gale Kaneshiro one day before her preliminary hearing was to be held.
Avila’s husband and two other daughters, 1 and 3 years old, live in National City. Avila has agreed to live with her father in Spring Valley in order to remain free on her own recognizance. Under terms of her release agreement, Avila is to have no unsupervised contact with her other daughters.
