COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Harney Sets Record as Golden West Routs Canyons

Jennifer Harney set a Golden West single-game record with seven three-pointers and finished with 42 points as the Rustlers defeated College of the Canyons, 105-76, in the first round of the Southern California women’s basketball playoffs Wednesday at Golden West.

Harney, a sophomore forward, made 14 of her first 18 shots and was 17 of 25 for the game. She was four points short of Golden West’s single-game scoring record of 46 set by Jill Guthrie in 1983.

Earlier Wednesday, Harney made an oral commitment to play at Cal Poly Pomona.

Erika Miller had 18 points, Cossette Smith 15 and Allison Bickel 14 for Golden West, which has won 43 consecutive home games.

Golden West (26-5) plays host to Antelope Valley at 7 p.m. Saturday in the second round. If Golden West wins, it will be making its sixth consecutive trip to the State tournament.

In other playoff games:

Saddleback 75, Santa Monica 45--Erin Schimeneck, who was voted player of the year in the Orange Empire Conference, had 17 points and 15 rebounds and Stefanie Moorman had 18 points, including 12 in the second half, for host Saddleback (26-5).

Saddleback shot 26% in the first half and led, 26-22, but the Gauchos outscored Santa Monica, 49-23, in the second half, shooting 57%.

Saddleback plays host to El Camino in the second round at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Long Beach 79, Orange Coast 65--Vivian Johnson scored 35 points for host Long Beach (23-6). Nicole Champion scored 18 for Orange Coast, which ends its season at 17-13.

In nonconference softball:

Orange Coast 1, Pasadena 0--Sam Lutsch singled home Shannon Ebert, who had doubled, in the sixth inning for the game’s only run.

Alisha Nelson (3-1) pitched a one-hitter for the visiting Pirates (7-2).
