Funding for Cal Grants
In your editorial, you rightly point out that Cal Grants properly funded could both help the private colleges and relieve enrollment pressures on the UC and Cal State systems of higher education. But, you, Gov. Wilson and the Legislature seem to ignore what is probably the best value in higher education, the California Community Colleges.
A two-year degree at one of these schools assures admission as an upper classman at UC or Cal State schools. Yet not enough courses can be offered (lack of funding) to permit a student to get that two-year degree in two years. I would urge that we support the efforts of the community college administrators to build public recognition of the quality education offered by these schools, and work to provide them with the necessary resources to adequately serve the increasing portion of the population who are turning to them for post-secondary education.
