Rio Mesa 64, Woodbridge 61 (OT)--Rio Mesa rallied from a nine-point deficit to win in overtime at Camarillo High School.

The loss ended the career of Woodbridge Coach Bill Shannon, who is moving to Florida. Shannon finished with a 175-112 record in 12 years.

The Warriors, who finished 18-7, held a 49-42 lead after three quarters.

However, the Spartans (13-13) tied the game, 51-51, with five minutes remaining in regulation.

Rio Mesa then led by as many as four points but Woodbridge tied the game, 57-57, on two free-throws by Ethan Twer with 1:55 remaining in regulation.

Neither team scored in the remainder of regulation, but in the overtime, Swanson Nunnery’s jumper put Rio Mesa ahead, 62-61, with 20 seconds remaining.

Woodbridge called timeout, and worked the ball to Arash Ghazinoor, who missed an 18-foot jumper. Nunnery rebounded and scored at the buzzer for the final margin.

Todd Loewe had 26 points and Twer added 20 for Woodbridge. Jason MacLean scored 22 points for Rio Mesa.

“It’s been a great run, and I’ve been real fortunate to coach some great kids including this team. If you win 18 games, you must be doing something right,” Shannon said.
