DeLaveaga Earns SCIAC’s Top-Player Award

Jeff deLaveaga, a senior on the Cal Lutheran basketball team, has been named player of the year in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and teammate Simon O’Donnell has been named to the All-SCIAC first team.

DeLaveaga, a 6-foot-4 guard, led NCAA Division III players in scoring with a 29.0 average and led the SCIAC in three-point field goals with 58. DeLaveaga also helped the Kingsmen (15-11, 11-3) to win the conference title.

O’Donnell, a 6-foot-6 senior center, ranked fifth in the SCIAC in rebounding with a 7.4 average and sixth in the SCIAC in scoring, with a 15.6 average.

Other All-SCIAC first-team selections are Chris Greene (Claremont-Mudd), Troy Roelen (Pomona-Pitzer), Tony Strickland (Whittier) and Jeff Sofro (Redlands).

Doug Michelson, coach of the women’s basketball team at Valley College, has been named coach of the year by the California Community College Coaches Assn. Michelson led Valley to a 29-5 record and the Western State Conference championship this season.

Registration sessions for the 15th American Roundball Corp. future stars spring development league are scheduled at three sites.

The league is open to boys and girls grades seven through 12. For a $125 registration fee, players receive T-shirts, jerseys, shorts and shoes.

Registration will be accepted at North Hollywood High on Sunday and again March 15 at 11 a.m. Boys only can register at Camarillo High on Sunday and March 15 at 3 p.m., and at Palmdale High on Monday at 7 p.m.

A basketball tryout session for the Maccabi Games is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. at Valley College men’s gym. Boys and girls 16 and under are eligible to try out for teams that will represent Los Angeles in the games Aug. 23-30 in Baltimore.
