ROUNDUP : Suppan Helps Crespi Get Off to a Positive Start, 12-3

Junior right-hander Jeff Suppan allowed no hits over the first five innings and struck out eight to lead Crespi High to a 12-3 victory over Long Beach Poly in an El Segundo tournament opener Friday at Long Beach Poly.

Suppan walked none and hit one batter before being replaced after five innings. One batter reached base when a third strike eluded the catcher.

Kyle Carden had two hits and drove in three runs for the Celts (1-0). Vic Seper and Jim Horacek each were two for four with two runs batted in. Long Beach Poly (0-1) scored three runs in the sixth.

In other high school baseball games:

Hart 7, Rio Mesa 1--Junior right-hander Gary Stephenson threw a six-hitter, struck out four and walked none in a first-round game of the El Segundo tournament at Hart. Stephenson allowed just one run, on Rio Mesa third baseman Jon McMullen’s double in the sixth.

Ted Kiester was two for three and drove in a run and Aron Miyata drove in two runs for Hart.

Westlake 4, Culver City 3--Senior right-hander John Snyder pitched a five-hitter, struck out 11 and walked four to lead Westlake in a first-round game of the El Segundo tournament.

The Warriors (1-0) scored three runs--two earned--in the second inning on three hits and three errors. Ty Varing went two for three with one RBI for Westlake.

Canyon 5, Hueneme 0--Three pitchers combined to stop host Hueneme on three hits in a first-round game of the Westside tournament. Ernesto Vasquez (1-0) tossed two hitless innings to get the victory in relief of starter Brad Coukos. Andy Cleland had a two-run double for Canyon and Chad Engbrecht added two hits, including a triple.

Mike Ortega had two of Hueneme’s three hits.

Glendora 7, Highland 1--Jeff Tepper doubled in the sixth inning to drive in the Bulldogs’ only run in a first-round game of the Glendora tournament. Andy Hoggatt had two hits for Highland.

Hoover 6, St. Francis 3--Senior right-hander Kevin Deitch gave up one run in four innings and hit a three-run homer to lead Hoover in a nonleague opener at home. Deitch struck out five and gave up four hits in four innings. Nathan Dishington had two hits for Hoover.

MEN’S BASEBALL

Cal Lutheran 20, Caltech 0--The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Caltech was called after seven innings.

Pat Norville (4-0) struck out nine in five innings for Cal Lutheran (14-0, 7-0 in conference play), which scored eight runs in the third inning on five hits and two errors en route to a 15-0 lead. Jason Wilcox had four hits and Mike Suarez hit two inside-the-park home runs for the Kingsmen. Bob Farber, Joe Cascione and Rollie Jacobsen each had two hits.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pierce d. Grossmont, 15-7, 15-7, 15-9--Lee Bradford had 14 kills and Miguel Ramirez added nine for host Pierce (7-1, 2-1) in a Western State Conference match.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Notre Dame d. Palmdale, 15-7, 15-7, 15-9--Matt Morgan had 13 kills and Morgan Hay had 14 aces for Notre Dame (2-0) in a nonleague match. Tom Stillwell added 11 kills and five blocks.

Campbell Hall d. L.A. Baptist, 15-10, 15-7, 15-6--Lee Sprague recorded 15 kills and four aces to lead host Campbell Hall (2-0) in a nonleague match.

GIRLS’ SOFTBALL

Chaminade 6, Highland 2--Freshman shortstop Ashlie Hayes had two hits, scored two runs and also came in to pitch out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning for the host Eagles in a nonleague opener.

Harvard-Westlake 12, Campbell Hall 5--Kelly Smith had two hits for host Campbell Hall in a nonleague opener.

Moorpark 5, Calabasas 1--Cara Shea tossed a four-hitter and struck out seven to lead host Moorpark to an opening nonleague win.

MEN’S SWIMMING

Cuesta 55, Valley 49--Valley freshman Womneen Jun won the 200-meter individual medley and the 200 backstroke in a Western State Conference meet at Valley.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

Cuesta 98, Valley 33--Valley sophomore Hanna Smits-Van-Oyen won the 200-meter freestyle and placed second in both the 100 and 500 freestyle events in a Western State Conference meet at Valley.
