Horace H. Heidt, son of the late Big Band leader Horace M. Heidt, said Monday that he will seek the Republican nomination for the Assembly seat being vacated by retiring Democratic Assemblyman Tom Bane (D-Van Nuys).

Heidt, 45, runs a Sherman Oaks apartment complex and other businesses built by his father. He has been music director for the Los Angeles Raiders football team for 10 years.

A Sherman Oaks resident and member of the conservative California Republican Assembly, Heidt will be making his first run for public office. He said he is “running as a businessman.”

Bane, 78, abruptly announced Friday that he is retiring from his 40th Assembly District seat, ending a lengthy public career. The district covers Van Nuys and portions of North Hollywood, Encino, Sherman Oaks and Reseda.

First-term Assemblywoman Barbara Friedman (D-Los Angeles), whose district was collapsed by reapportionment, said she will campaign to succeed Bane.
