OUTLOOK

Cervantes, who for several years has overseen one of the most successful softball programs in the county, returns for her ninth season with the young but potent Argonauts. The team lost all-county shortstop Michelle Cash to graduation and the University of New Mexico, but the Argonauts still have Kelly White and Taylor to pick up the slack. White (.324 last season), who has orally committed to play at Utah next season, is slated to play second base with Houston getting a shot at shortstop, but Cervantes will move White to shortstop if needed. “If things don’t work out, Kelly will play short. That’s where she’s going to play in college anyway. But she’s such an outstanding second baseman, I’d hate to do that,” Cervantes said. In Taylor, the Argonauts possess an excellent pitcher who can be overpowering. She was 13-4 last year with an 0.48 earned-run average and beat league-rival Kennedy twice. Corona (.280) and center-fielder Mariena (.276) provide offensive punch. Johnson batted only .118 in 1991, but she’s an exceptional catcher with a strong arm.
