Vineyard Leads the Aztecs to Victory Over UC Irvine

San Diego State broke out of a hitting slump by banging out 15 hits in a 14-3 victory over visiting UC Irvine in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at Smith Field. Derek Vineyard had three of the hits, scored three runs and had an RBI.

Teammates Brent Ferguson went two for three with two runs and three RBIs, John Wagner was two for four with two RBIs, and Benjie Grigsby had a triple and two runs scored. The Aztecs improved to 12-6, UCI dropped to 10-8.

UC San Diego, the eighth-ranked Division III team in the nation, easily dispensed with No. 22 Claremont, 17-4, in a nonconference game at Claremont.

Dave Lubs went four for six and had two RBIs, David Blum was two for three and drove in two runs, and Guy Cataldo got two hits and two RBIs for UCSD (11-0-1).

Claremont dropped to 6-8.

The University of San Diego fell to visiting Grand Canyon, 9-7, in 10 innings in a nonconference game. Grand Canyon (15-9) won on Matt Evans’ two-run single in 10th. Chris Collins (0-5) took the loss for USD (8-10).

Point Loma Nazarene split a doubleheader with visiting Southern California College, winning the first game, 6-5, in 12 innings, and losing the second, 9-3. Rodney Williams’ triple in the bottom of the seventh scored Dave Swearingen to give PLNC (8-8-1, 1-2 in the Golden State Athletic Conference) the first-game victory.

MEN’S TENNIS

UC San Diego dropped a 6-3 nonconference match to Iowa State at UCSD (1-4). The lone winners for the Tritons were Chris Belloli, in three sets, and Vern Yarnell, in straight sets, at No. 1 and No. 6 singles, and Chad Morse and John Cross in No. 2 doubles. Iowa State is 1-0.

SOFTBALL

Robin Rabello won twice as Point Loma Nazarene swept a doubleheader from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at PLNC. The Crusaders won the first, 5-3, behind Rabello’s three-for-three hitting, three RBIs and Missy Talbert’s three hits.

PLNC spread the scoring around five innings to win the second game, 11-10.

PLNC broke open the first game in the fourth inning, with Rabello’s two-run triple and a double and an RBI by Talbert. Carie Larson and Samantha York picked up three hits apiece in the second game. Rabello got wins in both games and a save in the second.
